In July, jazz will be heard and felt again in the Aldeias do Xisto. The guitarist and composer Bill Frisell promises maximum energy in the return of XJazz - Jazz Encounters in the Aldeias do Xisto, where he performs with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston, in a concert in Janeiro de Cima on July 17. The programme also includes performances by Rodrigo Amado, Kimi Djabaté, Cristina Branco, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Joana Guerra, Maria do Mar, Carlos Godinho, Carmen Souza and Théo Pascal.
"This year, we celebrate 10 years of XJazz history: 10 years of uniting cosmopolitan culture with folk culture and the resilience of the people; 10 years of inviting the public to enjoy music and the simple things like quietness and what is pure and true, stirring up beautiful and unforgettable emotions; 10 years in which we have established our land as a place of culture, creation and inspiration open to the world; finally, 10 years of music in the open air, so that all the senses are tuned to each place’s soul", says Rui Simão, Executive Director of ADXTUR.

Since 2012, XJazz has invited Portuguese and foreign artists to immerse themselves in the villages, exploring and sharing cultural identity, landscapes and musical arts. As always, the 2021 arts programme is rooted in the genuine identity and culture of the villages, benefiting from its social and environmental surroundings for unique moments of creation, discovery and sharing.
In this initiative, promoted in partnership with the JACC - Jazz at the Centre Club since 2012, the Aldeias do Xisto have already hosted 45 concerts and 7 arts residencies, in the scope of which 4 albums were produced: "Guitolão" by Carlos Barretto and António Eustáquio, "Xisto" by the quintet with Marcelo dos Reis, Angélica Salvi, Nuno Torres, Miguel Carvalhais and João Pais Filipe (both recorded in the Aldeia do Xisto of Cerdeira, Lousã), the self-titled album by Slow is Possible (recorded in Fajão, Pampilhosa da Serra) and "Fonte Grande", by María Villanueva, Vânia Couto, Yoshida Carvalho, Lucas de Centi and Sandra Pérez, recorded in Fundão, in the context of the residency held in the Aldeia do Xisto of Barroca.
The opening up of this region to creativity and artistic expression is further reinforced by XJazz, strengthening Aldeias do Xisto’s assets and values as a brand that welcomes experimentation, innovation and the connection between humans, places, art and nature.
