Throughout history, various cultures in the Americas have used ceramic masks and sound instruments as mediators between the body, nature and the invisible, in practices with a strong symbolic, ritual and spiritual dimension. Inspired by this heritage, this artistic residency in sound ceramics invites an immersive learning experience that connects five fundamental elements: clay, water, air, fire and sound in the heart of the Schist Village of Cerdeira.
Coming from Argentina to the Serra da Lousã, Martín Gastón Merlos and Julieta Bilbao, founders of the Nómada Cerámica project, bring with them more than a decade of research, practice and teaching in sound ceramics in Latin America. In this residency, they propose a contemporary approach to an ancestral practice, where technical knowledge, sensory experience and connection to the territory go hand in hand.
The programme includes a balance between theory and practice:
- observation walks in the Serra da Lousã
- construction of wind instruments (whistles)
- construction of a cylindrical brick oven
- wood-fired cooking techniques
- exploration of the performative dimension of sound
The residency culminates in a collective sound performance, a moment of sharing, demonstration of results and closing ritual, celebrating the creative process experienced in community. At the end, each participant will take home their sound mask and whistles, but also a deeply memorable experience that combines art, territory, memory and contemporaneity.
