Nature shows us that beauty lives in the imperfect — in twisted branches, in irregular stones.
In Cerdeira, community, art, and authenticity walk hand in hand. Come and celebrate the art of imperfection with us.
And what if we could find a little piece of Japan in the heart of Portugal? That is the proposal of the Sasukenei wood-fired ceramic kiln, now celebrating 10 years. From August 26 to 31, the Aldeia do Xisto of Cerdeira marks the 10th anniversary of this Smoke-Free Kiln, a milestone in the history of wood-fired ceramics in Portugal. Built in 2015 under the guidance of Japanese master Masakazu Kusakabe, this innovative kiln combines tradition, efficiency, and environmental awareness.
The celebration begins with a community firing from August 26 to 29, bringing together fourteen ceramicists in residence in Cerdeira, in a process that involves preparing, loading, and firing the kiln. On August 30 and 31, the program opens to the public with moments designed to honor the artistic and collective journey of the Sasukenei.
Programme highlights:
26–29 August
- Community firing with invited ceramicists
30 August
- 16:00 – Opening of the exhibition “10 Years of the Sasukenei – Smokeless Kiln” (guided tour, registration required)
- 17:00 – Smokeless Kiln Around the World – international presentation
31 August
- 14:30 – Kiln opening and unloading of the fired pieces
- 16:00 – Birthday cake and shared tea with Chá Camélia
More than just a technical event, this celebration pays tribute to the creative community and spirit of collaboration that shaped the Sasukenei – a symbol of simplicity, connection to the land, and artisanal dedication.
